Wrath of God: Halsey's Typhoons: Peril On The Sea

Wrath of God: Halsey's Typhoons: Peril On The Sea Review

In December 1944, the U.S. Navy was engaged in a ferocious battle in the South Pacific when a new foe arrived, one that proved more deadly than the Japanese. With virtually no warning, the fleet, which was commanded by the legendary Admiral "Bull" Halsey, found itself tossed across the seas by a powerful typhoon. The 100 mile-an-hour winds created sixty foot swells, and despite the best efforts of the sailors, three destroyers capsized and sank. The USS Hull was among the ships lost in the storm, and in HALSEY'S TYPHOONS, three crewmembers recall their ordeal in gripping detail. That they were rescued is a testament to the dedication of Captain Henry Plage of the USS Tabberer. But they were the lucky ones--790 sailors lost their lives to the storm. Just six months later, Halsey's fleet was caught unprepared by yet another typhoon. Mercifully, this one was less damaging, but the admiral's mismanagement of the fleet in the face of these meteorological threats led a Court of Inquiries to recommend he be relieved of his duties. HALSEY'S TYPHOONS serve as a powerful reminder of man's limitations when faced with the intrepid forces of nature.

The Essential Charlie Chaplin - Vol. 11: Sunnyside / A Day's Pleasure / The Kid

The Essential Charlie Chaplin - Vol. 11: Sunnyside / A Day's Pleasure / The Kid Review

The Essential CHARLIE CHAPLIN COLLECTION...a must-have for any fan or film buff's library. This definitive collection of 12-DVDs contains 57 of Chaplin's legendary early films in chronological order...a true historical legacy of the greatest comedian who ever lived.

COVERS CHAPLIN'S WORK AT KEYSTONE, ESSANAY, MUTUAL AND FIRST NATIONAL FILM COMPANIES.

* Beautifully animated DVD menus
* Alternate soundtracks available on certain DVDs; pick from the original soundtrack or an old movie projector track
* Mastered from the highest quality original material available.
* Detailed liner notes on each film, including original release date

Sunnyside (First National 6/15/1919) [33:32]
Charlie is a handyman in a hotel in the town of Sunnyside. His boss is a tough man and it's no wonder that overworked Charlie often bungles his jobs. While bringing in the cows from the pasture one day, one of them runs into a church. With Charlie hot in pursuit, the cow gets the best of him and knocks him out. While unconscious, Charlie dreams of dancing with four wood nymphs.

A Day's Pleasure (First National 12/7/1919) [20:41]
Charlie and his family are out for a day's pleasure...but mishaps occur at every turn. First, they get caught in a traffic jam in their car, then a tar spill. Next, they head for a boat excursion but more complications arise and poor Charlie just cannot relax. He gets seasick. A deck chair he sits in collapses, and finally he gets in a fight with a man who thinks Charlie has been flirting with his wife. The day ends with Charlie very happy that his day of fun is over.

The Kid (First National 2/6/1921) [1:05:00]
This was Chaplin's first feature-length production, and one of his most satisfying films; a simple but very effective blend of genuine sentiment and big laughs, where the little Tramp finds an abandoned baby. Chaplin incorporated a number of autobiographical elements in this film, drawing on his childhood memories of growing up in poverty. A young Jackie Coogan plays the "kid." The Kid is a classic and would have won many awards had they been as prevalent then as they are now.
