Secret Agent

Secret Agent Review

Secret Agent (1936 | B&W) 92 min.
This movie was made in 1936, long before Alfred Hitchcock became "Sir Alfred" and long before John Gielgud became "Sir John," courtesy of the Queen of England. Both of them, each in his own way, were magnificent entertainers-as you will see in this vintage film. And although Peter Lorre was never honored by the Queen, nor was Madeleine Carroll, both of them contribute their usual standout performances. Early on in this World War One story you will recognize the clever Hitchcockian twists. It begins with a British soldier (Edgar Brodie) returning from the war and discovering that he is dead... well, not really dead. It's just that the British government found it convenient to fake Edgar's death. What's more, they then ask Edgar to assume yet another name and hunt down a particularly nasty German agent in Switzerland. With that, the chase is on...

Special Edition
Includes an introduction by Tony Curtis and a bonus clip of the original theatrical trailer from Hitchcock's 1955 film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much," with James Stewart and Doris Day. Digitally mastered from the best available sources for the highest quality possible.

Assassins [Blu-ray]

Assassins [Blu-ray] Review

Robert Roth (Sylvester Stallone) is the best hitman around but the code and sense of duty once part of his deadly career are lost in a post-Cold War world of free-lance guns. He wants out. Not so Miguel Bain (Antonio Banderas), a driven killer who knows how to claim the top spot of his shadowy profession: eliminate Roth. Julianne Moore turns up the heat as a wily hacker swept into the duo’s running battle. Co-written by the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix) and Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) and directed by Richard Donner (the Lethal Weapon series), this awesome action tale plunges you into a world where what counts isn’t making the first move, but surviving the last.

Cliffhanger [Blu-ray]

Cliffhanger [Blu-ray] Review

Cliffhanger [Blu-ray] Feature

  • Condition: New
  • Format: Blu-ray
  • AC-3; Color; Dolby; Dubbed; Subtitled; Widescreen
Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, this time thanks to director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2 and Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) and some spectacularly rugged and vertigo-inducing high- mountain terrain. The opening sequence alone delivers what the title promises, and there's a doozy of an airplane stunt that was later reprised, with modifications, in Air Force One. Stallone, looking as tough and craggy as the mountains themselves, is a rescue climber who finds himself going after a gang of crooks (headed by John Lithgow in his bad-guy mode) who've hijacked a U.S. Treasury plane and crash landed in the Rockies (played by the Italian Dolomites) with millions of bucks. Outrageous action-packed, snow-packed, and scenery-packed chase sequences (featuring whirring helicopters, whooshing skis, popping gunfire, and clanging pitons that earned the movie Oscar nominations for sound and sound editing) take full advantage of the digital video disc's Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. --Jim Emerson
Sarah was an inexperienced climber. She trusted Gabe to rescue her. But something went wrong high above the valley floor...Sylvester Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, Janine Turner and Ralph Waite star in this high-altitude avalanche of action: a non-stop adventure peak with suspense and capped with heart-quaking terror. For Rocky Mountain Rescue, the mission is almost routine: locate five climbers. With the woman he loves (Turner) and his best friend (Rooker), Gabe Walker (Stallone) braves the icy peaks only to discover that the distress call is really a trap set by merciless international terrorist Eric Qualen (Lithgow). Now millions of dollars and their own lives hang in the balance. Against explosive firepower, bitter cold, and dizzying heights, Walker must outwit Qualen in a deadly game of hide-and-seek.

Intimate Biography: Rudolph Valentino - The Great Lover + The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Intimate Biography: Rudolph Valentino - The Great Lover + The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Review

The Great Lover: A Documentary (78 Min.)
In December 1913, an Italian immigrant arrived in New York City with a degree in Agriculture and dreams for a better life. Few who knew him then could have imagined that only six years later, Rodolfo Guglielmi would become Rudolph Valentino, Hollywood's first male sex symbol.

A successful career as a dancer led to bit roles in the movies. But Hollywood wasn't ready for a dark lover, so Valentino was typecast as the villain in most of his early films. His powerful portrayal of an unscrupulous Italian count in "Eyes of Youth" earned him the coveted lead role of Julio in "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." His sultry tango and tormented love scenes led to "The Sheik." Almost overnight, he changed the face of leading men in America with his smoldering gaze and passionate embrace. Women flocked to the theaters and men tried to bring him down.

But Valentino was much more than a sex symbol. He had a talent for comedy, spoke at least four languages, and was an avid collector of European antiques, books, fine cars and dogs. He was a skilled horseman, expert mechanic and serious amateur boxer. To his friends he was Rudy, a man of simple yet refined tastes who adored children and worshipped the women he loved.

His tragic death at the age of 31 caused riots and motivated suicides. His funerals in New York and Hollywood drew hundreds of thousands of mourners. And his fans only increased, as The Great Lover became a legend. Eighty years after his death, people still pack the chapel at Hollywood Forever for his annual memorial service, making it the longest running event in Hollywood. From his birth in Castellaneta, Italy, to his untimely death in New York City, Rudolph Valentino led a fascinating life marked by scandal, controversy and heartbreak. Join us for an intimate look at the man behind the icon.

Bonus Material Includes:
1. Valentino's 1923 recording of The Kashmiri Song - One of only two known recordings of his voice
2. Filmography - A complete listing of Valentino's films
3. List of locations relevant to his life and death
4. List of books written by Valentino

Assassins [VHS]

Assassins [VHS] Review

If Sylvester Stallone plays the world's number one assassin in this thriller, that must make Antonio Banderas, well, number two. The two are competing to hit the same target for a -million payoff, and their challenge takes them from explosion to explosion on a cat-and-mouse chase from Seattle to Mexico. Julianne Moore plays the cagey cat fancier and computer hacker who possesses a stolen computer disc that makes her a prime target for bad guys, and Robert Rath (Stallone) is only too happy to come to her defense. Director Richard Donner handles action sequences with adequate flair and has a good time blowing things up. Banderas has fun with the nonsensical plot, and Moore is enjoyable in one of her big-budget mainstream roles. --Jeff Shannon
