Arabian Nights (Universal Cinema Classics)

Arabian Nights (Universal Cinema Classics) Review

Arabian Nights (Universal Cinema Classics) Feature

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • Color; Dolby; DVD; Full Screen; Original recording remastered; Restored; Subtitled; NTSC
Warning: Technicolor silliness ahead, as Universal's nutty series of turban-and-camel movies comes into view. Arabian Nights was the first of these confections, and after it became a big wartime hit it spawned a series of follow-ups, most of them starring some combination of Maria Montez, Jon Hall, Sabu, and Turhan Bey. The story is nonsense, with Hall as a deposed caliph battling his half-brother (Leif Erickson) while remaining incognito amongst a group of traveling players. Montez plays dancing vixen Scheherazade, and her crazy costumes and limited acting range give ample evidence for her later enshrinement as a camp icon. The film's level of seriousness is aptly demonstrated by the casting of Shemp Howard (of the Three Stooges--like there's another Shemp Howard?) as Sinbad; John Qualen plays Aladdin, and vaudeville pro Billy Gilbert plays the leader of the troupe. Coming off best is Sabu, the young star of The Thief of Baghdad and The Jungle Book, whose innate likability is infectious even in these inane circumstances. Arabian Nights probably isn't the most fun of these movies; check out Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Robert Siodmak's crazed Cobra Woman, too. They work on two fronts: family-movie fodder and high camp. --Robert Horton ARABIAN NIGHTS - DVD Movie

Douglas Fairbanks - The Iron Mask

Douglas Fairbanks - The Iron Mask Review

In this exciting adventure sequel to The Three Musketeers, Douglas Fairbanks sails back into action in the role he made famous, and this time the mature D-Artagnan has his work cut out for him. After a set of twins are born to Louis XIII (Rolfe Sedan), Cardinal Richilieu ships one of the newborns off to Spain where the child grows up resentful and secluded. D'Artagnan's lover, Constance (Marguerite de la Motte) finds her own life in danger having witnessed the birth of the two babies, and this leads our hero to ride off in her defense. As time goes by, D'Artagnan comes to acting as the personal protector of the young King Louis XIV. They live a happy life together until one day, the young heir to the throne disappears in the night, only to find himself locked away in a secret tower with an iron mask strapped to his face while his evil twin assumes the royal identity. With such a dasterly plot threatening the future of France, D'Artagnan soon calls upon the aid of his old Musketeer comrades, Athos, Aramis, and Porthos to help him restore order to the land.
